excerpt:
To keep it under wraps, she faked her disappointed smiles so well, that no one but herself could see the roots of her crooked teeth. She showered off her painted mask every night and schemed up new ways of trying to appear apathetic. The gossip around that metaphorical cooler always included remarks that pointed her into the opposite direction of him. He, who she was strangely drawn to the way a dog is drawn to a stranger’s crotch. She would agree with the others that he was in love with that pretty girl from down the street. She would laugh when they teased him about it. She would also laugh even when she felt a faint hint of misery that he didn’t think that she was pretty.
